Bible verses for an intimate relationship with God

Salvation is important, because if we do not believe and pronounce that Jesus Christ died for our mistakes, and that God was able to raise Him again from the dead because of Jesus’ innocence, we would not be able to spend an eternity with God.

I did this at a young age, so my salvation was ensured however, I was generally miserable, and felt God never helped me and so I never really understood what the point was. I found myself asking, as many others do, ‘how do I experience true intimacy with God?’

Having gone through a spiritual process though, I came to see that we were designed and called to be a part of God as His sons and daughters and as such, He wants to be in intimate relationship with us.

What is intimacy with God?

But, what is intimacy with God really like? Well, to me it is a blessed assurance (I love this C&W version of the song by Alan Jackson) that Jesus is mine. The biggest thing for me in intimacy with God is that I know from my innermost core that in Him, I live and I move, and I have my being (Acts 17:28). Quite honestly, apart from His grace and love which I now understand, I don’t know how I lived without intimacy with God before.

There are many ways to get closer to God, and reading the Bible is imperative for that end.

What we will see through these intimacy with God verses, that helped change my understanding and life, is that it is God who chose and called us first, and as we have been given the freedom to choose, God is willing us to choose Him as well.

Ten bible verses about an intimate relationship with God

John 15:5 (MSG); “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you're joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can't produce a thing.”

This is such a good analogy Jesus uses to help us understand how we are designed to function. He supplies everything we need to achieve His will for us, and I like this translation, as it highlights the need for an intimate and natural relationship between us and God.

Acts 17:28 (KJV); “For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.”

This is one of my favourite scriptures, as it epitomises the depth of intimacy we were made for with God, because we are His children – no wonder I had generally been dissatisfied with my lot in life; I had been trying to function without Him! This has been so important in my journey to recovery from alcoholism, as well as other bible verses about addiction and recovery.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV); “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Short of John 3 :16 & Romans 10:13, this is the most profound piece of scripture for me for a relationship with God and it has certainly been the most important for Christian living. If I may make a suggestion here; ask God every day to help you trust Him, because if you’re anything like me, you will not be able to trust God without Him helping you to.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NLT); “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”

This was huge for me, as I had never really sought God. I had basically hoped He’d be there to help me with my plans. It’s easy to look for Him wholeheartedly – start telling Him the truth about everything – the good and the bad – and be brutally honest with Him, and God will do the rest.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT); “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done”

Very similar to the other verse, and I love scripture that backs other scripture; to me it shows importance. Thanking God is huge, even if it feels strange, because thankfulness shows gratitude, which is often the best way we can demonstrate our love to a God who is complete in everything.

Psalm 42:1 (NLT); “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.”

I’ve added this scripture as King David knew that the deep longing in his soul, like all of us who haven’t realised what that yearning in us is, was a longing for God Himself – He put this longing in us.

Romans 5:8 (KJV); “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Paul speaks here of the depth and strength of God’s love for us, and who with such a love for someone else doesn’t desire and long for their love to be reciprocated?

Philippians 3:10&11 (AMP); “And this, so that I may know Him [experientially, becoming more thoroughly acquainted with Him, understanding the remarkable wonders of His Person more completely] and [in that same way experience] the power of His resurrection [which overflows and is active in believers], and [that I may share] the fellowship of His sufferings, by being continually conformed [inwardly into His likeness even] to His death [dying as He did]; so that I may attain to the resurrection [that will raise me] from the dead.;”

Need I say more about this scripture, as this version says it all? What I love is that fact that we share in His resurrection, and will be sons and daughters of God, seated with Him in heavenly places… I cannot help but get totally giddy when thinking about how He chose you and me to be His children.

Ephesians 1:4 (MSG); “Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love”

This scripture blew my mind, when I realised how important we are to God. He created the entire universe, yet before He did all this, He thought of me and of you, and He decided to love us the most of everything He created. Intimacy with God is the only way to true fulfilment; that’s why I wanted to be in relationship with Him more than anything else!

Revelation 3:20 (NLT); “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends”

This scripture made me realise that God was already there and waiting, and that it was only my decision keeping Him out. To open the door, all we need to do is to believe He is there and ask Him into our hearts – He takes over control of the relationship from there on in.

Despite what all these scriptures tell us and what I believed, I still found it impossible to feel a truly intimate relationship with God until I was introduced to a solution that had an actual step for step process I could follow, and this opened up the door which allowed God in.

Book - Breakthrough into deeper intimacy with God

Experience God’s presence in your life in a real and fulfilling way

The process seemed to unlock hidden blockages I had been unaware of, and showed me a way to clear them.

Once this happened, I found God was there; in me with me and directing my life for His purpose, and this has allowed me to live in peace, comfort, joy, and a renewed hope for the future.

I wanted to share this solution with as many as wanted it, which is why I have written Breakthrough into Deeper Intimacy with God, and I pray and trust that you too may find a deeper relationship with God as well.
